Tapping Screws

At Ford Fastener, we are happy to offer you a wide variety of stainless fasteners. One of the many types of screws we offer are stainless self tapping screws, also known simply as “tapping screws”. Stainless self tapping screws work by piercing holes in materials that range from metal to wood and beyond. They drill into material much like a drill bit would. Unlike a drill bit, though, they also have a screw or hex head and are designed to be used as a permanent fastener. They tap their own hole as they are driven into the material. They are known to work fast and to thread a deeper hole than many other types.

Self tapping screws were first used in the early 1950s, when they were used to sheet metal buildings. Today, they are used for this, as well as a wide variety of other sheet metal applications. In situations where the material is too thin for drilling holes, for example, tapping screws are ideal. They can also be used for applications including: surgery, as dental implants fasteners and orthopedic bone screws, and DIY carpentry.

Our fasteners are made from 410 stainless steel. The durability of stainless steel makes it an excellent material to work with in almost any industry, and 410 stainless steel, the standard martensitic stainless steel variety, is composed of between 11.5% and 13.5% chromium, along with 15% carbon. This level of chromium content offers good corrosion resistance. 410 stainless steel is also resistant to: steam, hot gases, mild acids, food, mild alkalies, dry air and fresh water. It can be made even stronger through processes like hardening, which we offer. Many of our stainless fastener products are bright hardened. Bright hardening is a heat treatment applied to steel and stainless steel parts that hardens the material without using salt quenching, water or oil. Because bright hardening instead involves heating in an inert atmosphere, it yields parts with very bright, high quality surface finishes. Our bright hardened 410 stainless steel screws rarely require additional finishing. As with anything else, if 410 stainless steel doesn’t work for your application, or if you have something else in mind, please reach out to us with your questions.
